Living a dry and lonely life in drought-stricken Taipei, she spends her time scavenging for water, and he tries to take a bath in the rooftop water tank after a day of porn acting. If life gives them watermelons, make juice and have pulpy sex with them? Injected with deliberately anachronistic and camp musical numbers, Tsai’s tale of love, drought, and desperation mixes sexual frankness and surreal minimalism with aesthetic crudity in an exploration of his characters’ disconnected, existential malaise.
