What is 4DX, and is it worth it?

4DX adds motion and environmental effects to a normal screening: seats that pitch and roll with the action, plus wind, water spray, scent and strobe cued to the film. The picture and sound are standard — what you are buying is physical involvement.

It suits films built on movement: chases, flight, roller-coaster set pieces. It actively works against slow or dialogue-heavy films, where a seat lurching under you is a distraction rather than an effect. Worth knowing before you book: the seats move enough that it is not for everyone.

2 cinemas in Hong Kong currently run 4DX, with 50 screenings of 6 movies over the next week. Tickets start at HK$90 and average HK$169.

A 4DX screening costs about 61% more than a standard one. Whether that is worth paying depends entirely on the movie: the difference is obvious on a large-scale visual release and marginal on a dialogue-driven one.

Cinemas with 4DX: B+ cinema apm (Kwun Tong), GALA CINEMA (Langham Place).

Compared with the other formats

Hong Kong also runs IMAX, Dolby Atmos. Each sells something different — some the picture, some the sound, some the seat — and each has its own explainer and current screenings.
